Given the price of this knife set, I was eager to check them out. And given the price, I think they're worth buying, especially for those on a budget, maybe in a home or apartment for the first time learning their way around the kitchen.

The knives are listed as having an HRC of 56. Most premium knives will have an HRC of 58-60 and anything below a 52 is too soft for kitchen use. They seem to be reasonably well balanced and so far have not shown any signs of discoloration after a few weeks of use.

The wood handles are comfortable enough and are fairly attractive hanging out in the knife block. Whoever thought of those blocky, ugly letter to use for a logo failed. The logo could and should be much better looking--more unique. Also, it would hurt if it was moved elsewhere...maybe somewhere on the handle.

Rating. I'm giving this set a five not because they are made from the best steel; rather, I think the current selling price makes them a good value. If you're looking for a chef's knife whose price is enough to make your friends whistle--look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a decent set that will get the job done, this set isn't a bad choice
